Another thing that comes to mind with North Americans renting cars and driving over here is the difference in road signage and subtle differences in driving practices. I personally had never driven a car here until I moved here, and then studying for the licen[c|s]e test was quite an eye-opener. What come immediately to mind are signs 303 - 306 on this: < http://www.linker.ch/eigenlink/verkehrsschilder.gif > (Yes, those are Swiss, but I don't see a huge difference.) And the two variants of traffic circles: signed and unsigned. The former is the traditional kind, where you have right of way entering the circle (yield to your right), and the latter where those in the circle have right of way. And then the jet-lag. And the Autobahn: Germans have to complete 45 hours of behind-the-wheel driver's training in addition to the written training and test, including Autobahn training. In many US states, however, there is *no* requirement for behind-the-wheel driver's training to get a license. (Or at least this was true when I was young.) And then these people come over here and some treat the Autbahn like a race track. It's a personal quirk of mine. |
