Fränkische Schweiz Holiday on TV |

There's a weekly 90-minute Sunday night TV (WDR) programme called "Wunderschön", in which someone goes off to some beautiful corner of the country/Europe/world; a sort of travel show, I guess. This week's episode is in the fränkischen Schweiz. Our lovely hostess (who grew up "in Franken" but doesn't say where AFAIK) is staying at a pear farm, helping with the harvest in return for room & board. She rides around on a motorcycle, stopping in at ...where... a traditional old Brauereigaststätte? A traditional Bierkeller? No, rather, Nikl Bräu (12 minutes into the video or so) and that prime location in the fränkischen Schweiz, GREIFENKLAU (36 min). When it opened several years ago, I was hopeful that Nikl Bräu might become a good brewery, one worth seeking out. But unfortunately, every time I have their Hell, it's like Barfüßer or Steinbach (or any of a multitude of modern German brewpub's Hell): murky, yeasty, and just, why bother? It's as if these brewers are trying to emulate Widmer "Hefeweizen" (Portland OR - if you don't know it, it's not a proper Bavarian Hefeweizen, rather, pale ale yeast, murky, and bland.). ![]() That, and Nikl also makes numerous bottles of ridiculously expensive (like 15€!) "craft" beer, like bourbon-barrel Bock or whatever. I will drink the Hell occasionally at the Biergarten nearest our home here, beggars can't be choosers and all that. Meh. Lots of lovely scenery of her tooling around late summer/early autumn "Franconian Switzerland" in any case, worth a watch. |
