| Sure, you can differentiate between them, one is Guinness the other is Spezial U! You can try to describe them - colour, taste (but very, very personal), method of brewing, method of fermentation, method of maturing, method of dispense, etc. but to try to fit them into some category, that's another matter. I suppose that it could be argued that you could produce a fairly long list of styles for British beers (maybe someone has done this?). I've just read Juergen's list of styles - mind blowing but who am I to argue with the expert! But what I do know is that Juergen largely judges a beer by what it tastes like and, if it tastes good, he likes it. Ok, there are some broadbrush definitions used (Frankische Schweiz Dunkel, for example), which strike a chord with those who have been there and tried the beer but, otherwise, it seems to me that all these arcane distinctions don't really serve much of a purpose, except to provide a bit of entertainment for those who have an interest in such things. I rest my case, M'Lord! |
