| This "crafty" beer has become quite controversial in the UK, specifically because of the marketeers at BrewDog. It's been around for years and years in the US. Blanche de Namur is probably the best witbier I had during our time in the Netherlands in recent months, the other contenders being Celis, Hoegaarden (bland...to use that oh-so-controversial term here again!), Watou Wit, and Blanche de Bruxell (outright *sour*...not sure how it's spelt). I would try the Blue Moon, I suppose, but not if I were in England. There be proper ale over there. Actually, that reminds me, the Amsterdamer wit was pretty decent. What's its name again...? Something White, they also do a Blonde, which is a decent enough blonde lager. TreinJan? It's got kind of a hipster image, with a sleek label. Bought a couple of their glasses for the holiday flat and left them there. There were others, less remarkable. As with most beer, wit is better when it's not so strong. The Namur one is down around 4.5%, making it light, and freeing up the orange and coriander. All the time you've spent in Belgium, and spiced wit is something new to you? |
