| Good points Jason. I'm not sure whether the aims of the Texans are profit led or have more community-based aspirations. I'm willing to suspend judgement until we see what develops. Regarding the use of the term Zoigl: I'm sure that you know my view on this matter - I've exercised it enough in this forum, too much, some might say! Yes, French and Italian wine producers are well protected by national laws but the German authorities seem totally oblivious to distinctions in beer classifications, prefering to stick by the outdated and totally meaningless Reinheitsgebot. The Zoigl community of the Oberpfalz tried to get protection but were laughed out of court and had to resort to the 'Echte Zoigl' tag. But, without the cash or the marketing capability to establish this mark, it seems fairly useless. I know from my talks in Eschawo that, sadly, the 'Echte Zoigl' is deeply divided, with some thinking that the use of the term 'Zoigl' by commercial breweries helps to publicise the product. One or two Zoigl houses in Eschawo even refuse to pay the paltry fee involved in promoting the term. Three cheers for the brewers of Neuhaus who really stick together and support the 'Echte Zoigl' concept. I just don't understand how some products can be protected and others not; thus, Cheddar cheese can be made all over the place (except, apart from a little niche producer, in Cheddar!), while other point of origin cheese names are stricly protected. Seems very odd to me. |
