Knoblach in Schammelsdorf

I'm not disagreeing with you that bitterness and hoppiness are different aspects (one a taste and the other an aroma/flavor), but there's no reason a beer can not have both.  I take your comments as presenting the beer as a bitter experience rather than a hoppy experience... well I contend that it is both.

First, in no way do or did I suggest that "a beer can not have both" [emphasis mine]. I'm not brand new to drinking and evaluating flavours and aromas in beer, having learnt to judge homebrew competitions 20 years ago. Second, yes, this beer was bitter, but as I said, not very hoppy, certainly not to the extent you had described it as. I think I posted about this back right after my visit, maybe two years ago now, and I think it got kicked around here back then.

(Huh...browsing the archive for 2014, I see Jeff, Barry, and I posted something about Knoblach at
http://www.franconiabeerguide.com/discdethist.php?IDKEY=ZYHA010101 but the content of the posts doesn't show up. FRED?????)

Did I say it was not hoppy at all? No, I did not. Just that the hoppiness was not up to the level of the bitterness. And yes, maybe it was just that batch -- as you know, these small breweries' beers can vary from batch to batch. Not just variations in brewing the batch, but also lagering can have an effect on aromas.

I've only been there twice in 11 years, I'm sure your sample size is way larger than mine. And I'm game to expand mine -- would love to see myself proved wrong on this next time I visit. Meet me there?

Krug in Geisfeld, or Griess? The former I can barely choke down, being laden with wax, apples, and sometimes butterscotch. Underhopped. But then when I'm in Geisfeld, I'm on the other stuff, so, small sample size, and perhaps bad luck with the batches.

And how the Roppelt & Griess Kellerbier varies from week to week over the course of a Bierkellersaison!
