| Ah, Barry, I feel honoured to being used as an example for beer taste development. :-) But it's really very much as you noticed. When I was 14, 15 yrs. old, the age when you normally start drinking beer, most pubs in my area were selling Hauff, Tucher or Patrizier. Some sold Ansbacher Hofbräu, a few sold Gentner from Wolframs-Eschenbach. Löwenbräu Vestenberg was present in a very small radius. Most Löwenbräu pubs existed within Petersaurach community (not one directly in Petersaurach, by the way). When I was away with friends, I drank Pils - without much recognition of its origin. Someday I went to a Löwenbräu pub with some friends and tried the dark beer. I was totally impressed, how different it tasted. Also tried the other sorts and found them all much nicer than the beers from the other breweries, especially the big ones. So I bought the beer for each party and it became the beer I grew up with. How was the taste of Löwenbräu Dunkelexport? It was on the malty side without being only a bit sweet. The hops really came through. And there was a special taste to the water (the cemetary is situated just 100m above the brewery spring). And, of course, half of the brewery was built into the sandstone hill - all lagering was done in the rock. So there was a kind of stony cellar taste in the beer. I guess it tasted like a mixture of a Barth-Senger, a Kathi and a Leupser dark beer. So yeah, that's how my beer taste was trained and I still use the Seidla of Vestenberger in my memory as a benchmark. |
