| The fun continues! Arranged to visit Hallstadt & Kemmern on Saturday with Jason. Goldene Loewen was shut on arrival in H and the rain was falling. So, diverted to Doerfleins instead. The Helles was in good form and we were introduced to the Fass Dunkles, which is quite a complex beer: quite dry at first taste but with more sweetness coming through. Well worth a second visit (if we get the chance). Then more good news, Jason found out from the helpful landlady that GL would open at 4 PM (seems it opens at 4 PM Fri, Sat, Sun). Quick bus to H and there was the welcome sight of the big blue door wide open! Inside, all as previously: Frau Diller in attendance and a small group of regulars. Most important, the Hoenig bier vom Fass was available. IMHO, this is regularly one of nicest beers in the region, a soft golden colour and a mellow rounded taste. For Sunday, we considered walking to Schmausenkeller but, the weather wasn't great for a nearly 20 k hike, so we settled for Hirscaid to Roebersdorf. Quite impressed with Weber beerwise, a very acceptable Helles Kellerbier, less impressed with the 1970s hunting lodge iinterior! Called in Kraus on the way home - interesting comparison between their kellerbier, which seemed quite thin, with Weber's. Got down to the rail station on Monday intending to take train to Eggolsheim for the short walk to Witzgall only to find that there were no trains running in either direction. So walked back to town and found Loewenbrau Keller open - great! Concocted plan to meet Jimbo and Nick in Spezial, where we were joined by Jason, who had made some kind of recovery from his day in Eschawo. Very convivial night and great beer! Where to Tuesday Jim? |
