| I am perpetually at it, in trying to help people with English -- it's my "job". But you would certainly not shy away from helping a poor colonist learn the proper adjective form of "Manchester", would you? Or Lancaster? You mean the adjective "Franconian" is not proper English?!? Oxford says it is. Beer historian Ron Pattinson uses the term, as did the late Michael Jackson, once, in my copy (perhaps Americanised?) of the 5th Edition (1996) of his Pocket Guide. (Re the Franconian Beer Museum, specificially. He also mentions the brewery Drei Kronen in Strassgiech with their 1308 Pils.)   I don't think you suffer from the peculiar British "Belgium beer" [sic] affliction, so I don't think this is related to that. I would grant you, that Franconia is more obscure than Belgium. But I ask again, even if you can not get yourself to use "Franconian", why would you, in speaking or writing English, say or write "Franken beer" and not "Franconia beer"? As I said in that big other post, I had assumed you were simply trying to say "fränkisch" without knowing the proper spelling. (Jackson does mention the "Frankische [sic] Schweiz" in his Guides!) |
