I came at it from a couple of directions... On my first visit to Germany, I was staying with my father at the house of one of his (German) collegues. The man asked if I would like to taste some Franconian beer and he said it in such a way that I knew it must be something special. I did not know anything about Franconia and to this day I don't know what the beer was -- it was very good and not a rauchbier. But the terms "Franconia" and "Great Beer" stuck in my head. Much later I got involved in home brewing and that got me interested in beer styles. The first rauchbier I have had was a "Kaiserdom" Rauchbier and it was among the nastiest beers I had ever tasted. (I learned later that it actually was brewed by Schlenkerla). I know now that it was just a very, very old bottle (which is all you could get in the US). For a long time I had no interest in going to a place that brewed beer like that! After doing some reading and talking to people that had been to Bamberg I realized my error of my ways and made a visit and the rest is history...
