Mike, that would be sad if pubs are indeed closing because of the ban. I will point out, though, parts of the US have much harsher winters than in most of the UK, and smokers here have accepted standing outside for a smoke. Of course, the bar culture in the US is quite different than the pub culture in the UK. In the US, the smoking ban has encouraged some non-smokers to go out for a drink more often.
