Well, looking back, I see I didn't say "pro" judges. It was what I was thinking about though, when I said "trained". As in, trained and certified pro or amateur judges. Speaking of homebrew judging, I guess I'm still smarting from the loss I took back in...oh...1996 at the Salem (OR!) competition we put on. My IPA (can't recall if it was a British- or Yank-hopped one) scored ...read it and weep... 45 points, which was of course the highest score awarded not only in that competition, but also in any I know of from the area and time. But, not only did it not win Best of Show, it didn't even place in the round, because it got knocked out by a 36-point-scoring English Bitter in a non-scored taste-off to select the best Bitter/PA/IPA. (It was the best under the IPA's though.)
