| Erlangen was a big *exporter* of beer back then, to elsewhere in the region and country. Guess the hard-working Hugenots didn't drink so much themselves. Even into the 1980's, there were a couple of "Erlanger Beer" brands sold in the US by Pabst or Stroh's or a couple of those big old "regional lager breweries" founded by German immigrants in the 19th century, most of whom have been assimilated into whatever-the-gigantic-global-beer-company-is-these-days, I suppose. (It's called "ErlangeR" by a quirk of German grammar. Most adjectives constructed from city/town/village names are declinated "-er", like Berliner, Bamberger, Forchheimer, Stiebarlimbacher, etc. A big exception is for most city names ending in "en", where the en is dropped. Erlanger, Ellinger, Hechinger Bremer, etc. Except Münch(e)ner, Pils(e)ner and a few others I can't think of. "Eeesh bin ein Berliner".) I've got a book on Erlanger Bier that I've read part of, but it got quite boring and I gave up. I'm sure Ron P'son knows the story--pity nobody here can ask him! |
