Re-dispensed Beer (cont.)

I remember coming to Ireland around 1963, when pubs still had wooden casks of porter and stout on stillages behind the bar. There was always a half pint or more in a glass beneath each tap, I believe usually from an older barrel. When a pint was ordered, this was topped up from a newer barrel. I suppose that it meant you never had a really bad pint but I can't remember what it tasted like. Someone remerked on a web forum that Guinness simply invented the two-part pour as a way of covering the move from proper beer to the kegged variety that we suffer today - probably true, as they have always been better at marketing and selling the stuff than making it!
