Evolution of English and German

English also has a Present Continuous tense ("I am drinking a beer") which is also thought by some to be of Celtic origin. The use of "do" as Jimbo describes is a "semi-emphatic auxiliary verb" and I don't think formal German has an emphatic mood (but who knows about dialects)
