| I watched the programme too, great series along with the other one. I think regarding plzen he was saying that it feels more 'old east' than necessarily being unchanged. I think its industrial heritage contributes to this, it feels a bit like a typical industrial city in the north of England except probably 30 years ago. I like plzen, not least for the unfiltered Pilsner Urquell, but it has a number of microbreweries too. It's not flashy or particularly attractive but there is a sense of place. It is also a good transport hub and within easy reach of the spa towns marienbad and carlsbad (german names). A must buy is the beer guide to Prague and Czech republic by Evan rail, maybe a little dated as all guides tend to be but still essential. I would say that if you want to visit one of the most beautiful small cities in the Czech republic check out Cesky krumlov right down south on the Austrian border. A UNESCO heritage site, lovely spot but predictably touristy in high season, but then everywhere is in July and August (prague is a nightmare). You would go through Cesky budejovice too (home of budvar), not remarkable but worth a tour of the brewery as I'd be surprised if it remains state owned too much longer as the state wants money and the US bud is lurking with intent. |
