Weiss or Weizen

Not a fan of them by either name but I know that Gutmann (nearly in Franconia, but not quite) is universally accepted as the absolute best. Available all over the place in Franconia, too.

Weizen means "wheat", and weiß refers to the colour. Both refer to the same thing, you can effectively order a wheaten beer using either term. Which was the original term though.....?

I was just lectured about the history of the Dutch term "witbier" during a session at Kafé Belgie last week, but have already forgotten the details. And I'm not sure I should lend much credibility to the source, as she (bartender lass) thought London Pride is a lager.
