B&J in Franken: Report 1

Greifenklau has never impressed me, except the view from the Biergarten. The normal lager is bland and was buttery last time I was there, with Ian, a ratebeerian of Kent, a year or two ago. The Weihnachtsbock a few years ago with Uncle Jimbo was also just...bland (and slightly vegetal, IIRC).

Not surprising to hear your description.

Colour me skeptical of anything having to do with "warm-weather chemistry" or whatever Robert (was he in costume?) thinks is going on with Schlenkerla. I personally wouldn't mind a bit less smoke in it, so long as it's made up for with either a reduction in strength or increased maltiness.

"4.5 OG" makes no sense to me. Please clarify! 4.5% Stammwürze would yield a beer half as strong as my 3% ABV stuff. 1.045 OG would yield a not-very-strong beer, but might be what you mean...? (He surely measures in % Stammwürze, the proper German way!)
