Wagner Merkendorf special

I thought that the Wagner visit needed a bit more detail.  When we arrived at around 2 pm, the main room was fairly full, mainly of people of our vintage enjoying heart dinners.  A helpful and friendly lady brought us a leaflet (how some of the Bamberg breweries could learn a lesson in service from their rural counterparts!) showing a short history of the brewery and details of the 9 beers available, vom Fass: Pils, Marzen, U Lagerbier, Weisse, Festbier, Bock hell, Bock dunkel and Richard Wagner dunkel; vom Flasche, Jubilaumsbier.  An amazing selection for a small rural brewery.

We started with seidlas of the U, which is quite a different beer from Mahrs U (for example).  Really, it's a standard kellerbier, but with good charactor, quite hoppy but with a slight yeasty flavour.  Then I sampled the Marzen, which was excellent, malty but with a nice hop hint.  J. had a RW Dunkel, which she pronounced one of the best dark beers that she had tasted.  Then I tried a Pils, which was smooth and not so different from Herrenpils (IMHO, as good) - J. had a schnitt (generous) of Dunkel.  To finish, I tried a schnitt of the Dunkel, a lovely malty dunkel.  All in all, a superb brauerei pub, great beers, great atmosphere.

As the afternoon progressed, the Stamstisch filled up and a continuous round of cards (probably Schafkopf) commenced.  There were several tables of regular drinkers and, all in all, trade for a Tuesday afternoon was brisk, to say the least.  Two other customers caught the eye: the first, a man, who had accompanied us in, sampled the Marzen and the Pils, taking photo's of each.  However, the second, adopted a much more thorough approach to his beer sampling, working his way through the card with half seidlas (kleine?) of each of the breweries beers.  Each was carefully photographed in detail from different angles before drinking, with copious notes taken.  Whilst this was happening, his lady partner slowly worked her way through a coffee and cheesecake!  It put our casual approach to beer sampling to shame.

Sir, if you are reading this post, I apologise for not making contact but we were in awe of this conscientious and thorough approach to the subject!
