Erlangen Kerwa -best beers, kellers? |

| I've lived in Erlangen for nearly a decade(*), and go to the "Berch" a couple of times a year, though only during the day til early evening. It gets really, really, really packed by 19.00, which is simply not my thing. It's immensely popular, drawing hundreds of thousands of people. The Anstich is also supposedly similarly full, but I've never been to one. Kitzmann's beer is abysmally sweet and bland, I cheerfully avoid it. Tucher's is about as bad. Maybe both are worth trying, if you're interested in how bad Franconian Festbier can be, but otherwise, head to Steinbach's two Keller(s), for a dark, malty beer with some interesting character. Still not as good as the better Festbier(s) are at the Forchheimer Annafest, but good and enjoyable. Kundmüller operate a small Keller, and offer a couple of different beers, but I don't recall them ever doing a Festbier. Alt of Dietzhof have a stand way down at the opposite end of the grounds, with both their Hell and Dunkel, but these can very from decent to absolute dumpers, as Chris K. & I found last year. Probably the worst beer I've had in Franconia, come to think of it. Also available at at least one Keller is Mönchshof Festbier, which is better than Kitzmann, but still a bit too lacking in character for its strength. AFA a traditional fest goes...it might be a bit too "big-city" for most to consider it very traditional, but then that's part of its tradition.
