| Am currently having a Chimay Wit, purchased from the nice eager-German-speaking Pakistani chap running the Night Shop in the village. It's maybe not what it was, but hasn't fallen like the other Chimays have. I suppose because it's been marketed so much over the last decade or two? Premium pricing, 2,50 a bottle. (Swigging it from perhaps the only extant mug on this contintent labled "Czechvar", as Budvar was imported to the US. Only packed rugged glassware along, and having originally planned for the beer wastes to the south of us, I brought a couple cases of Pilsner Urquell...which is still a fine happy hour tipple, even in Belgley.) Orval is as it was, of course, but is almost always really fresh. But at 3,30 a bottle at the campground tavern, I'm not complaining. Westmalles seem to be more or less the same. What are the others? Oh yeah, that really expensive, really rare one. Think it also hasn't changed much, except the blonde became 6° or vice versa. Wanted to make it there this trip, but won't, as we're just too far for a bike tour (though really the same distance to Stiebarlimbach from home!), and I'm just underwhelmed by Westvleteren. I had it when it was still available in taverns for reasonable prices, and don't see the need to seek it out now. And the fish restaurant here in Nieuwpoort serves the Bernardus beers (Praise Be Unto Tim Webb for listing it!) Was quite impressed with the Dutch Trappists in Utrecht. I USED TO never think much of the La Trappe beers in the past, but now I find them to be quite rich. I hear there's one in Oregon now. It is an interesting experience, living on a Flemish campground. We stayed a night near Koblenz, then 4 nights west of Brügge, and now in Westende, just east of Nieuwpoort. In this big, decked-out luxury motorhome destined for corporate use. The TV doesn't turn on, though the massive satellite dish works, but that's okay, we're going glamping without TV. Now on to the Rodenbach Grand Cru, served as the dear, sweet, bloodied Lord intended: doubled up in a half-litre Czech Lager Krug. Anyway. Herzlich Wilkommen to Fred! |
