Never thought I'd see this in a German supermarket!

Most kits are definitely top fermented, although even a lager yeast can work at ale temperatures ... that's how the USA's Anchor Steam Beer is made. Nothing stopping the budding homebrewer from seeing if he can get a half-liter of working yeast from a local commercial brewer, if the brewer is amenable.
