Griess - Löwenbräu - Kreuzberg Saturday |

| Was another fabulous trip, this time with Gerhard and Norbert along. Pizza and Zwetschgenbammes were quite a hit at Griess, though I falsely described the latter as being smoked over plum tree wood; Norbert reminded me that it's just cured, but when cut, it "looks like" cut up Zwetschgenbaum wood. (I'd started earlier with Gänstaller Kellerbier Mandarina in Gerhard's Biergarten, then a bottle of Orval (6 months old) in my trusty Löwenbräu (Neuhaus) Weizenbier Glaskrug from the Bierothek, followed by a bottle of Anchor Liberty Ale(!) for the bus ride to Griess.) Rain hit pretty hard as we left Griess for Buttenheim, and let up whilst we were at Buttenheim, up in the pavillion overlooking the two breweries. Again, the Löwenbräu Lager (probably filtered, ergo not called "Kellerbier") was quite good, better than it had been for a long time. Then off to the Kreuzberg. People mostly followed my advice to start with "der Keller in der Mitte", Lieberth's, where the very ...erm... simple Lager went down well for others better than for me (had a few sips, but...), and most went right from there to Friedel's Brauhaus, skipping over Rittmayer. The Brauhaus am Kreuzberg proved quite a hit, with several people telling me they were amazed by the place. Yes, it's new, etc., etc., and the beer's more expensive than next door, but they do know how to put people up. "Schwarzer Abt", 3.8% abv "mit Laktose" proved to be a very credible sweet/milk stout. Not my favourite tipple, but I had one and enjoyed it. The Hopfengold was excellent once again. I never thought to check the train schedules -- the last S-Bahn from Bamberg was replaced with bus service, and for some reason, the Deutsche Bahn doesn't use proper city buses for this, but double-decker passenger buses with no room for bikes or wheelchairs. So the bike had to overnight in Bamberg. Wheelchair passengers get taxi service, which is fair enough. But stupidly, the bus didn't stop at every S-Bahn *station* along the way, but at 2 or 3, he just stopped along the main road *near* the station, and if you didn't know your way...also, he called out "Altendorf" instead of "Buttenheim", since that's where the station is located, but again, if you're not from around there, you'd be confused. The train from Forchheim was blessedly non-packed with drunk Annafesters. |
