Sandkerwa...der Zapfhahn

The stall on the bridge, also the stall with beers from the Sonne, Bischberg, before the Schloß Geyerswörth, and the area inside the Schloß Geyerswörth are parts of the Sandkerwa since some years. The latest expansion is the stall at the bridge.

You find also new stalls, roundabouts for children etc. at the Markusplatz.

In the last maybe 10 years the Sandkerwa have had the problem, that for reasons of safety, fire, to many visitors etc. many stalls in the Sandstraße (between Katzenberg and Krippenmseum) and in the Kasernstraße has been closed. In this year also the music stage at the Katzenberg is closed. To hold the level of stalls (and fees) the Sandkerwa enterprise has tried to expand the festival area. But they have a problem. Bamberg is divided in areas of the so-called "Bürgervereine" (citizen communites) with historic boundaries. So it isn't possible to expand in the areas of the other Bürgervereine. P.e. the area of "Alter Kanal", where the Café Abseits organizes the festival Canalissimo belongs to another Bürgervererein (Bürgerverein Mitte) and not to the Bürgerverein Sand, who organizes the Sandkerwa.

The Bamberg Bürgervereine are also interesting from a historical point of view. They are part of a policital movement before the first world war. The citizen have tried a kind of democratic partizipatoin in the German Empire. The same with unions and communities of craftmans and sport clubs as part of the socialist movement. There is only one other region in Germany where You can find the similiar civic association (around Hannover).

Later (after 1980) some cities tried to develop similiar new communities (called: Stadtteilvereine (neigborhood associations).

Each of the Bamberg Bürgervereine has some hundreds members. City councils are part of the board of directors. These Bürgervereine organize local festivals, collect money for social matters and discuss and represent local interests, p.e. .

It's not a duty to be member of the Bürgerverein where You live. P.e. I am member of the Bürgerverein Sand, because I like their policy and also the Sandkerwa more than the Bürgerverein Ost, where I live.
