I think that highlights the general difference between drinking beer in UK and Germany (and maybe between UK and many other places).  In the UK, the tradition has been for pubs to be places to drink beer - food and entertainment are relatively late arrivals.  Going back to my youth in Manchester, 50-odd years ago, it was very rare to find a pub that sold any food, other than a packet of plain crisps.  Entertainment was almost unheard, except in a few pubs in big cities that specialised in such and the odd bit of Irish music in certain areas.  You went to the pub to drink and, mainly, to drink beer - maybe also to play cards, darts and dominos.

In Germany, it seems to me that many pubs are really more like medieval hostelries, supplying food and accommodation, with beer a secondary feature.
