| Cheese with cake in it? Cheesecake? We brought a couple of packets of traditional Canterbury cheeses home from the Four Candles micropub in Broadstairs last night. That's a micropub as opposed to a normal pub or a brewpub, or a microbrewery. Well, except in this case, the (micro)landlord has indeed installed a tiny brewing kit in the cellar, and is now offering his second batch along side 3 or 4 other beers. It's a 4% ABV ale with Munich malt giving a lovely light amber colour and crisp maltiness, and 100% Chinooks hops from the US. As is typical of micropubs, it has a dozen or so barrels on stillages in a climate-controlled closet behind glass. There's no bar, you order from the barman and he brings you your beer. No music either. No food except crisps, cheese, and maybe pork pies. This chap's a fairly traditional sort of ale man, and was visibly disappointed to learn that he's now a "craft" brewer, simply because he's mixing up ingredients and brewing non-traditional English ale. His beer is absolutely excellent, and I am amazed that he had no brewing experience before starting up, and this is his second batch ever brewed. (I guess he learnt a bit at a local microbrewery, but never brewed on his own before.) Yes, Gänstaller is brewing for the international beer geek market, as Gerhard explained above a couple of times. Yes, why not just brew really good normal beer? Well, he does that too! (And "einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr" from Ramsgate.) |
