Repitching yeast

About 20 years ago (back when I owned a homebrew shop) I knew a guy who was trying to brew "the perfect 5 cent beer."

Back then you could go to the Great Western Malting plan in LA and they'd fill up whatever container you brought for 35 cents/lb.

The only decent lager yeast available at the time was Wyeast liquid cultures and they relatively expensive. So he planned on repitching from one batch to the next.

He ended up brewing 11 batches in a row -- all with the same recipe. The beer got better for about 4 batches, stayed good for about 4 more and then started to go downhill. He didn't do anything (yeast washing, etc) in between, so it isn't surprising that things went south.

Hit didn't hit his mark -- worked out to be about 7 cents per 12 oz bottle (not counting labor, propane, etc.) It was a really good beer (even though it was 25% or so rice). He called it "High Humidity,"
