Tell me about it. I was the oldest in my intensive courses, and it just sunk in much harder for me than for the youth. That, and I was the only one who'd not already had significant experience with foreign languages (remember the US public school system's non-requirements in this regard).

(And of course, insert whatever snarky comments about my being likely to have the hardest time in any course on any subject!)

It it notably more difficult for 50 YO Siemens engineers to improve their English than for 25 YO ones. Brain pliablility, I like to say.
