| Moving to Bamberg as in to live and work there? I keep telling people that spend a lot of time and resources travelling here that they should just simply move here, glad to see you following this advice! (If even coincidentally.) OTOH, I was quite a lager freak when I moved here, having evolved into that after being an ale nut and Belgo beer freak. It took a few years of living here before I moved on from lager. Don't let that happen to you. AFA Mönchi vs. Mahr's goes, yes, Mönchi does have a bit more character than Mahr's. But still nothing like the others I mentioned. With the Hölzlein...I simply haven't had enough of it to compare. The bottled stuff doesn't impress much though. Never been to Hummel's Keller...is it bayerisch Anstich there? Really don't remember their Kellerbier at all. The Reundorfer is another very good one, though we've found it to wander into diacetyl For me it comes down to character & flavour per unit of alcohol. Ideal are beers like Kent Brewing Session Pale at 3.7% but loaded with hop character, and yes, not that much malt at such low gravities. Sadly, there are no Franconian lager counterparts to this sort of session ale. Or low-gravity mild or bitter, it doesn't have to be pale & hoppy, just good. (And no, Greene King IPA ain't good enough. Nor is the execrable Shepherd Neame Master Brew!) So something like the Aisch lager has enough character to justify & balance the 4.9%, Mahr's and Mönchi don't. Extend this to even blander beer at 5.6% and you can imagine my problems with the miserable Edelstoff in München. |
