Schlenkerla and Spezial, Germanic-ish Beer in Kent

I seem to recall Fred enlightening us Spezial's serving method some time ago but can't remember what it is.

Yes, Schlenkerla Maerzen is still vom Fass but, believe me Jimbo, is does taste different, as my Rauchbier taster and advisor wil also testify (also Frank who drinks the stuff regularly).  It is less smoky and definitely sweeter.  Apart from the fuss about the taste of Mahrs U, it remained one of only 2 beers in Bamberg city vom Fass.

Great to see that you (Becky and Nick) are enjoying life in Broadstairs.  I came across a short piece on the town in the Irish Independent this weekend, citing it as the favourite haunt of middle-class Londoners before air travel made southern Spain their holiday destination of choice.  It is mentioned in John Galsworthy's 'Men of Property' (part of the Forsyte saga series) as the watering hole for the archetypical middle-class Forsyte family.  It was the later place of abode for Charles Dickens, who lived in the aptly named 'Bleak House' and is, of course, in the election constituency of South Thanet, prospective seat of the libery-loving and beer drinking Nigel Farage (slight boob in his latest picture, as he's shown handling a pint of John Smith's loathsome Smooth Bitter).
