Melkendorf [different beer from bottle and barrel?] and Lohndorf

This is an interesting discussion about some of the breweries in the Franconian Toscana. I agree that all opinions and perspectives are welcome and would like to contribute my own to the subject of Melkendorf especially.

I've probably been to Winkler about 40 times in the last 4 years or so if I had to guess. I have also taken some guests and exchange students at the University of Bamberg there as well. Yes, it is one of the most unusual buildings that I have ever been to, inside and out. Yes, the service is not really up to standard either from an American point of view. Depsite going there so often (for the chicken and the beer), the main hostess is probably one of the least friendly people I have ever met. She knows who I am, who my girlfriend is and even our perfunctory orders at this point, but we always get the same cool reaction. It used to bother me, but now we just sort of consider it part of the experience. And, yes, I did have a weird interaction with the brewer when a friend and I tried to purchase bottles there for the first time. However, since then, I have bought singles and cases without any problems. The only real complaint that I have about the bottled stuff is that it has to be consumed within about a two week period, but that can be said about a lot of breweries in this area. They also refuse to give tours for whatever reason.

As for the beer itself, it is probably one of the most süffig that I have had around here and I am proud to say that I have most of Oberfranken crossed off the list by now. It's an enjoyable beer and one that is fairly consistent, which is not always the case elsewhere. I think it is also one of the only breweries in that immediate region that only brews one style, so they should be able to devote the appropriate amount of attention to it.

I've been to Winkler many times before and will continue to go back, which is something that I can't say for Knoblach or Griess. To each his own....
