(This mainly for Jason!).  Finally, after 5 weeks, made it down to Weiden, as weather was a bit overcast and not suitable for Freibad.  Pleasant walk around altstadt and headed across the tracks.  Weiden is a much bigger place than might be expected and the western suburb is a bit of a maze of little streets and blocks of apartments.  But, in one of those acts of hospitality that make visiting Germany a pleasure, a young woman on a bike saw us consulting a map on a street corner and stopped to help.  She didn't know Brauerei Gambrinus but consulted her Smartphone to give us directions.  The brewery is quite large but tucked away in a residential area. which I suppose is the reason that the tap is a bit like a British pub or club but still not unpleasant.  Actually the experience was excellent: the barman was really friendly and helpful and, although they didn't have any beer on tap (seems amazing next to the brewery but he explained that his customers had such varied tastes and Gambrinus brew so many different beers that it was impractical). There was a lot of choice and we tried the Zwickel, Dunkles and Helles and all were good.  Ok, not outstanding but better than most small-town breweries.  Also, the other customers were very friendly and made us most welcome.

As a postscript, the Maharaja restaurant is about 5 minutes walk away and is definitely recommended.  We had Vegetable Jalfrezi and vegetable kofta and both were excellent - probably the best Indian food I've had outside the UK (nearly up to the standard of that in Manchester!).
