Thanks a lot, both of you.  Jason, perhaps you are thinking of the 990 coming from Bamberg but their is a version that leaves Hirschaid every Sunday 10.42, via Robersdorf (also an idea!), then on to Frensdorf, Burgebrach, Monsembach and ending at Ebrach.  Good to know that the walk/ride from Schmausen to Untergreuth is reasonably easy, as I've always wanted to visit the latter.
