No, it is not futile.  There are still defined beer styles such as Pilsner, Helles, Hefeweizen, Schwarzbier, etc.   It is just that on top of that there are descriptors such as Kellerbier, Zoiglbier, Vollbier, Landbier, etc., that do not relate to a single style, but to other factors.
