| Now some real figures, taken from my oldest GBG - 1980, so 10 - 15 years after the period referred to in last post. My regular tipples were: Boddington's bitter 1034.5 - mild 1033 Greenall Whitley bitter 1038 - mild 1033.7 Joseph Holt bitter 1038.5 - mild 1033.4 (2014 1040/1033 but IPA at 1038) Hyde's bitter 1036 mild 1032/4 (2014 1036.5/1033.5) Lee's bitter 1038 mild 1031/5 (2014 1037/1032) Marston's bitter 1037 mild 1032 (occasional Pedigree 1043) Oldham bitter 1037.2 mild 1031.7 Robinson's best bitter 1042 bitter 1035 mild 1032 (dark 1032 Unicorn bitter 1041) Tetley Walker bitter 1035.5 mild 1032 Believe me, as the GBG agrees, all these beers were tasty drinks. Some were malty, some hoppy, but all were flavoursome. Some of these breweries are long gone - the victims of big brewery depradation not any lack of popularity (Boddies probably the best example). Fortunately, in view of my forthcoming visit to the UK (Manchester and North Wales), it is still possible to get Holt's. Hyde's, Lee's and Robinson's - I've shown current figures above (2014 GBG). I'm also looking forward to trying some of the products of local brewers, such as Conwy, Great Orme, North Wales, Purple Moose and Snowdonia. In common with many new breweries, they all brew a bewildering variety of beers, some of which are over 1040 but all have some regular beers around or below this figure - should be exciting! |
