OT:Prague Mini-Report

So I had 3 lovely evenings there over a week ago now. And I have no real news to report on beer, other than I made it to quite a few recommended by Evan Rail and from Fred's list.

Except...all my ranting about not wanting any Czech IPA...the ones I had (3 or 4) at Zly Casy were EXCELLENT. Really, citric or passion fruit hops (blessedly, *no* onion or garlic notes in the latter -- just pure, lovely passion fruit), not *so* strong, clean, clear, and ***GOLDEN***. As in, no ridiculously out-of-place crystal malt.

I was somewhat disappointed by the 10° beers I managed to find, which were too few. Mosquit's right, these are generally too thin. Just not as good as they should be. My mix of 80% Pilsner Urquell & 20% Störtebeker alc-free yields a much tastier, richer 3.6% ABV session lager.

Of the 3 brewpubs I visited, U Flecku was the best for beer. The other two in the city centre had beer that was just a bit too boring. Competent, but boring. The U Flecku was rich in comparison. Yes, yes, it's a tourist place, but it is also beautiful. I was surrounded by Germans, and the staff spoke German.

Other pubs of note were the one at the end of the tram line (smokey, the non-smoking room was full, but not so bad as only a few people were smoking and the CZ/N footie was on) was absolutely brilliant. A must. The 10° there was lovely, come to think of it.

And the Pivovarsky Klub was great, even if none of the draught beer I had on my one visit was fantastic.

And on Monday late afternoon, in lovely sunny weather, several stands were serving good or decent beer along the river to the south of the Charles Bridge. A bonus.

They say Bamberg is a "mini Prague". I can see that, which the city in general looking like an over-grown Bamberg with trams. Except around the town hall, that's spectacular and unique.

So...highly recommended. I shall have to return with Mrs & doggie for a long weekend when the weather's nice, but not too many tourists are there.
