| Just got back from a short trip to UK, where we were based in Manchester (no time for pub visit!) and North Wales (loads of pub visits). We weren't there long enough for very accurate price comparisions but here's a few quick impressions: beer - more expensive than Franken/Oberpf but not much different to Ireland. Average in a normal boozer around £3.20 but Wetherspoons varied between £2 and 2.40 - guess I'd be a regular! Average in Ireland, probably €4.50, so comparable to UK. supermarket food - seemed cheaper than Ireland but dearer than Franken/Oberpf but a bit difficult to say with any accuracy. transport - hard to compare with Ireland because we get free travel (one advantage of being old!). Not sure about Germany; yes, there are great bargains like the Lande karte and VGN specials but we got a weekly bus ticket that allowed 1 person to travel anywhere in North Wales for 1 week for £17.50, so that wasn't bad. accomodation - we rented an apartment, which worked out at £40/night, which I guess is comparable with much of Frankem though there are some great bargains, such as our last place in Seigendorf. Of course, we are spoiled with the Oberpf. One difference was the quality of the service: no welcoming bottle of wine or beer, and water in the fridge; no offers to pick us up, etc., and, in general, the apartment was fairly average. Of course, all this is made tricky by exchange rates: we're lucky as we still have a little cash in our UK accounts but it sure is expensive for people coming from Euroland. I'll try to put something together about the beer when I've finished painting the bedroom but, one thing for sure, Nick won't be crying out for more hops! There were so many hopped (perhaps overhopped?) beers that I longed for a nice pint of Manchester-style beer - that is, with a balance of hops and malt. |
