It's probably difficult for you to imagine the way that pubs in england were 50 years ago.  Mostly, just a couple of plain hand pumps, no clips because everyone just drank mild or bitter.  No fruit machines, juke boxes, lager, Guinness, food, or anything else fancy.  Simply a plain room in a perpetual fog of fag (cigarette not the American version!) Smoke.  Lovely, except the smoke!
