| Probably not, John. But I remember the 'German Keller' sensation in Manchester. Around 1962, some bright spark opened a 'cellar bar' in the centre of Manchester. It was the place to go but, with a pint of Loewenbrau 'Lager' at £0/7s/6d (about €0.33 - a pint of bitter was about 2/-d or €0.10c!), there was no way I was going to waste hard earned cash. so I never sampled the delights of Munich's best (or worst?). Had to wait for 50 years for the pleasure of really sampling properly lagered beer in Franken, though I remember drinking a Koelsch in Koeln around 1965. Sadly, Loewenbrau 'Lager' was a harbinger of things to come, as it wasn't too long before ersatz lager brewed in such German strongolds as Luton began to swamp the UK market. Fortunately, thanks largely to CAMRA, real ale is still going strong but beware the Trojan horse in the shape of craft beer. |
