Is it the UBSR now? The Union of British Socialist Republics? Prices set by a board of labour union representatives or summat? So after many weeks spent "on" the blessed Isle of Thanet last year, I spent 5 days in Manchester, with days out to Glossop (incl Old Glossop) and Wigan, as well as a pre-flight session in Wolverhampton, at that wonderful Great Western Pub. I didn't make serious note of prices, but suffice to say beer was dearer in Manchester centre than in Wigan. And it struck me as dearer than in Thanet. While prices in Canterbury are higher, you can drink very affordably in Ramsgate, Broadstairs and Margate. The micropubs apparently agree to set their prices at 3 quid a pint, and then being in the south, you get a full pint, not an ounce or so lost to sparkler head. And there are lots of great proper pubs around, even if too many are Shepherd Neame, with their undrinkable .... Right, lapsing into a bit of Thanetonian whimsey there again, sorry. I've read on the Twitter that the UK alcohol taxes are the highest in Europe. Using Gerhard's numbers, I reckon a pint costs you nearly a half pound more in just tax in the UK than in Germany, using 1.33 € / quid. So that 3 pound pint in Broadstairs would be 2.50 in Franconia, actually in line with Erlangen prices. I personally gladly pay a premium for the diversity of beer I can enjoy in the UK, as well as the pub culture. YMMV. (And all that extra CO2 in US beer has to be paid for somehow!) |
