| New Seasons, the Portland chain of near-organic near-fair-trade grocery/supermarkets, opened a store a half km from our old house in Tigard. When we lived there (97 - 04), our neighbourhood was on the edge of civilisation. When I visited last summer, I had trouble finding my way around (no sat-nav in the car) because of all the in-fill developmen that had occurred over the decade I'd been away. Back then, it was a 45 minute walk to the nearest pub (McMenamins Greenway), and I would've been astounded to think of a New Seasons opening up a 5 minute walk away, let alone one with several beers on tap. This must indeed be a new thing - keg beer on draught at supermarkets. It was a bittersweet experience, thinking of how great that would be, but then how much more crowded the place had become. I've more or less made peace with the ending of the big Oregon chapter of my life. (I shudder to think of how schmaltzy this would come out if I were not writing 100% sober at 09:00!) |
