| First, most important, the beer at Roppelt: first this year and pretty damned good - too good to spill on the table! Now DB! Yes, it was an absolute shambles or, should I say, another absolute shambles because Tuesday was as bad, leaving us to cancel our plans. Yesterday.... Arrived at Buttenheim to find train supposed to be 5 minutes late. Then changed to indeterminate time late. No one had a clue what was happening, so we decided to walk to Eggolsheim - about 5 kms but no cycle path down a busy road. Near Eggolsheim, we could see that trains were running again, to add insult to injury. Anyway, made the 265 to Stieb. Coming back, we decided to take bus back to Forchheim. When we got there, it was chaotic. The info place was closed, there were no DB staff and trains were running higher and thither, completely at odds with the info signs. We got on one to Hirschaid and, then, fairly quickly, an S-bahn appeared, due to stop at Buttenheim. But it didn't! Outside the station, and going to fast, the driver seemed to hit the brakes. There was an awful smell of burning and the train eventually slithered to a stop 50 metres past the end of the platform. We tried the doors but no way. After a few minutes, the train started going forward, leaving all those intending to get off wondering what the hell was going on! It crawled down to Eggolsheim and stopped, so we got off as quickly as possible. Fortunately, and at complete odds with the info board, an S-bahn appeared fairly quickly. By the time we got home, we were too knackered to get out again! Incidentally, Nick, J thought she saw you getting on the train we got off at Eggolsheim. |
