As I'm sure Her Majesty will remind Obama today, there is no such thing as "American English" - there is English, and then there are mistakes.

(And I hope my blah-blah above was clear: It's humourous for me to hear Englishmen say "me and my friend...", which is grammatically incorrect. "My friend and I..." is what we learnt in school. What you wrote sounds half-way between, hence the musing about where you learnt that.)
