| One of the conclusions that came out of our recent visit to Franken was that I don't really like Pils! Or really, I should say the Franken variety, as I don't want to insult our Czech friends because I haven't had much opportunity to sample real Czech Pils in situ since my visit to Prague in 1968 (a year not only notable for my visit!). However, I have sampled the Franken version in many places both this year and on previous visits and generally find it to be fairly sweet and without any real character. Recent samples include Pils from Loffeld, Vierzehnheiligen, Kemmern, Frauendorf, Ebensfeld and a number of others. I have never really been that impressed with Keesmann Herren-Pils (in spite of many people raving about it) and, to my mind, Faessla Pils is not nearly so good as their Lagerbier. In almost every case - no every case - I have preferred a Kellerbier, Lagerbier, Dunkels or Vollbier to a Pils and J. positively dislikes the stuff! Is this just down to individual taste (probably so) or are the Franken Pils just pale imitations of the Czech originals? I should add that some of my favourite beers come from Neuhaus (Obf) - specially Kaeck'n zoigl - which are brewed from around 90% Pilsner malt, probably in much the same way as the Franken Pils, but they are not sweetly cloying and probably more resemble a good Franken Helles. I'll probably be cast into the outer Franken darkness for such blasphemy! |
