Beer Gardens / Biergärten in Erlangen

Proper beer gardens are rare in the city. Up on the Burgberg, the hill at the north end of town, is a complex of Bierkeller(s), similar to the Kellerwald in Forchheim, though much smaller. Kitzmann operates one throughout the season (May - Oct), but may be the only one open outside the massive Bergkirchweih fest in May-June. It affords a view of the city to the south, and a stroll past all the other Keller(s) might be worthwhile in itself.

To the east end of town is the Unicum Biergarten with very yeasty Niklbräu as well as Kloster Scheyern Dunkel on tap (the latter is not actually Franconian, but is good enough to 'may as well be'). Nice location on historic Prussian cavalry -cum- university grounds.

To the south of the Zentrum lies the Biergarten am Röthelheim, offering Kitzmann beers on tap. I've not been in many years, but I think there may only be the Pils and the Dunkel on tap. Maybe also the Hefeweizen.
