Helles/Landbier/Vollbier in Erlangen

Whereas if you get the Schlenkerla Hell on draught, then you've got a leg up on Bamberg, where it's only available bottled AFAIK. An excellent Hell, full of character for relatively low alcohol.

Another idea: If you happen to be on the train towards Nuremberg, you can hop off at Erlangen and walk a few minutes to Café Manhattan, where you can have the Hell(es) from the tiny Brauerei Alt in the village of Dietzhof on tap.

Or a 1 km walk to the lovely Lorleberg Platz and Das Lorleberg Café, where the excellent Held Bräu Hell is on tap, from another tiny village brewery. Just down Bismarkstraße from there is Café Brazil, which has the sweetish Huppendorfer Vollbier and the dry, malty, nearly Altbier-like Hetzelsdorfer Vollbier on tap. (Now, these ain't hell, rather more amber.)

From there, it's 750 m by foot to Café Schwarzstark, which has Rittmayer (from Hallerndorf) helles Landbier as well as the most excellent dark brown Meister Bräu Vollbier on tap, (open weekdays only). Bus 20 & 294 stop right outside, both of which run to the Arcaden stop, 400 m from the Bahnhof.

Now that I've plotted that all out, I see that you can do a very decent tour of good countryside village lager in this city, even if the city's own beer's pretty dire in comparison. ("You" figuratively or specifically.)
