Personal Best Of....?

Hard to argue with any of those, TBH. What explicitly helles Bier though...I keep thinking back to the Witzgall Vollbier, draught (keg or tank?) at the Gaststätte. It's got a nice "black pepper" note to it, almost reminds me of Pilsner Urquell in a way, with a slightly sweet & buttery note to it as well. But I know I'm missing something else.

2. Mager, aye, or maybe Held Bräu.

3. Roppelt or Griess, but both vary quite a bit. When Roppelt's not great, it's really disappointing.

4. A desert island beer for me wouldn't be from Franconia, sorry. At the moment, I think it would have to be Harvey's Sussex Best, or maybe even their 3.7% Pale Ale, like a Best Lite.

BTW David, I live in Erlangen, so it's not a big deal for me to know about and document those places, but you're welcome! There are a couple more cafés I should've added there to form a more complete "guide" to finding good beer in town, but was only thinking of the specific Hell(s) in response to your question. I'll add them in a follow-up. None of them are "traditional Franconian" Brauhaus though, rather, more like Café Abseits: city/student cafés. Which are also nice to experience when travelling Europe IMO.

The thing about those places & beers is it's a good collection of otherwise well-scattered countryside brewery's offerings in a convenient café crawl.

Aside: the term "Vollbier", like "Landbier", doesn't say anything about what sort of beer it is, just that it's "full strength": i.e. neither low-strength nor strong beer. It's actually a tax classification, to be taxed at a higher rate than low-strength, but presumably lower than a strong beer.
