It's OK to be confused by the "new" (since 1996) spelling rules. Schloss has a short s, just like Sesslach, and should be spelled with ss. BUT, there is an annoying exception for proper names, where the old spelling may remain. This makes it difficult for us foreigners to know if the preceding vowel is long or short. A visit to the Schloss has ss, but the actual establishment is allowed to keep Schloß in its name. Also Roßdorf and Aufseß. No like.
The Swedish spelling reforms of 1889 and 1906 took about 30 years to be universally applied. But with exceptions for proper names...
