Well, home again, it's raining, not fit for golf and, to tell you the truth, I'm knackered!  Although the journey back was without mishap, it was still pretty tiring: Monday, 4 trains and bus Eschawo to Burgau (including one train very late, so 1 hour wait at Augsburg-Oberhausen, awful dump of a station); Tuesday, only 2 trains and a bus to Memmingen but then flight and journey home.

Eschawo was as good as always, met lots of old and new friends, Zoigl was generally good, with only a couple of iffy nights (though Jason judged the Zoigl on one of these as being good - just getting choosy!).  The weather was fantastic, 2 days with some rain out of 22, the rest, 25 - 30 C, so great great for Freibad but a bit hot for serious walking.

Many memories but one really funny one involved a visit from the local Burgermeister!  To explain, the short two hundred metres of road that runs between the Fewo house and Wolframstube (for those who know Eschawo) was being rebuilt: an operation that was extending way past its scheduled date and was costing our hosts more than €11,000!  A note of caution: if you're thinking of buying a house in Germany, you may be liable for a proportion of the cost of street repairs.  In typical German fashion, the work started between 6.30 and 7 am, usually with a load of gravel being delivered outside our bedroom window and then being compacted - a noise that sounds like a helipcopter taking off!  Actually, we were reasonably relaxed about it all, but our hosts got very upset and complained to the Burgermeister - 'important visitors to Eschawo, not good for tourist trade etc., etc.''  So, one morning saw the arrival of Burgermeister and the lady from tourist office, who presented us with two glaskrugs (with Eschawo slogans) and two tokens to enable us to buy €10 each of Zoigl from any Stube in Eschawo or Neuhaus - never a dull moment!

As for Franken, well I've written about this a bit already but the first 3 days were great: lovely evening with Jason in Forchheim (except no Schwarzer Anna for J.), ending up with nice Polish couple in Haschaada keller and lots of Steinfeldser beer (plus a lift home up the big hill), interesting and most pleasant evening out with Juergen (although sad that so many breweries in the Steigerwald are now closed) and excellent afternoon with Nick in Sauer and Krug (thanks Becky for the lift home).  Last couple of days, the weather broke, so we were confined to Bamberg, which is hardly a death penalty!  Re-discovery of Faessla continues apace (I really like their Lagerbier and J. liked the Pils), while Spezial U was as good as ever.  Only real surprise was that J. seems to have gone off Schlenkerla Maerzen!

I hope that, by next year, we'll have shifted and have more options for easier travel: ok, we don't have to fly thousands of miles but our journey time is longer than flynig from the east coast of the USA, with loads of train travel, up and down steps etc., carrying our back packs and, sadly, we're not getting much younger (though very nice guy in Schlenkerla wouldn't believe our ages - lovely man!).  I don't think we'll do the split holiday again, too much messing around, lost days, cost, etc., so try for a month in Oberpfalz and month in Franken.

Now, heading to UK mid-October house hunting - oh, and a few pints of ale!

Slainte!
