| Jawohl, Jim, it's very, very subtle. I can imagine it in my head (the difference), especially when I imagine someone saying "eine Maß vom Fass". Even though "die Mass" is supposed to be a shorter 'a' as Gunnar says, I think people do "mis"-pronounce it with a longer one. Or it's a Franconian thing. It doesn't really matter though, there's so much more important to worry about with the language. I agree with Gunnar, just type 'ss', just as with 'ae' when you don't have an 'ä' conveniently at hand. Replacing 'ä' with 'a' is a true, jarring spelling error, whereas 'ß' with 'ss' isn't. |
